Kate AmrineA passionate and creative performer, Kate Amrine is a prominent trumpet player balancing a multifaceted career from developing new repertoire and curating concerts to freelancing with many different groups in the New York City area. Selected past performances include a solo recital in Mississippi at the Music by Women Festival, a featured recital at the International Women’s Brass Conference, and a recital at the Women’s Composers Festival of Hartford. Upcoming performances include an off Broadway workshop of Duncan Sheik’s new musical “Alice by Heart” and an orchestra tour to Japan to perform Torelli’s “Concerto in D” and Leroy Anderson’s “A Trumpeter’s Lullaby.” Kate is also extremely dedicated to commissioning and performing new music, premiering over 30 pieces both as a soloist and a chamber musician. Her debut album “As I Am” was recently released in November 2017 featuring new music by women composers, including one of her own compositions. She commissioned half of the pieces and successfully crowdfunded 80% of the costs of the project. Through this project, she has been invited to present recitals at various festivals and events including the Women Composer’s Festival of Hartford, the Women of the World Festival of Baltimore, and the International Women’s Brass Conference. Kate also has administered a call for scores for works for unaccompanied trumpet through Vox Novus’ Fifteen Minutes of Fame. She performed 15 one minute works for solo trumpet – selected from over 90 submissions.
As a composer, Kate wrote a piece for her debut album and continues to write other works for unaccompanied trumpet – most recently combining with singing and speaking. She is also actively commissioning new works for trumpet, recently premiering “Thoughts and Prayers” by Kevin Joest, which features trumpet and electronics in a survey thru perspectives on gun violence. Kate frequently performs on Broadway and in other regional musical theater productions both in and outside of the NYC area. She completed two tours with Broadway: The Big Band Years in fall 2015 and spring 2016 and played second trumpet in the National Tour of Annie in December 2015. Selected regional show experience includes two New York Musical Theater Festival shows: Icon (2016) and Into the Sun (2015), off broadway productions of Mary Poppins (Westchester Broadway Theater), Three Penny Opera (Atlantic Theater Company) and Lies My Father Told Me (National Yiddish Theatre). As a commercial player, Kate also performs with groups of many different styles and was fortunate to appear on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon in an all-girl horn section with the band Sleigh Bells. As a contractor, Kate has experience hiring everything from a full orchestra to a big band to a horn section for various events. She contracted a full orchestra for a recording session of Netanel Hershtik’s album The Art of Cantor at Avatar Studios. She also has hired musicians for over 10 different musicals, rock groups, and various church events. She is currently an Adjunct Instructor at New York University, where she has been teaching private lessons to undergraduate students since 2013. In addition to managing her own private studio, Kate also has experience teaching for several years at various El Sistema inspired programs including the Harmony Program and Baltimore Symphony Orchestra’s Orchkids. Kate received a Bachelor’s degree in Trumpet Performance from New York University and her Master’s degree from Peabody Conservatory She currently resides in Brooklyn and is a doughnut aficionado. In addition to performing with a variety of groups as a freelancer in New York City, Kate has enjoyed teaching all ages and experience levels for the past ten years. She is currently an Adjunct Instructor at New York University, where she has been teaching private lessons to undergraduates for almost five years. Kate recently started coaching a trumpet ensemble and directing the jazz ensemble at a high school on the Upper East Side. She is also the Brass Coach for a youth orchestra on the Upper West Side associated with InterSchool Orchestras. She also maintains her own private studio where several of her students have been recognized for honors and awards. Some of Kate’s students have held the first chair in school ensembles, were selected for Honor band, and auditioned for and were accepted to the Lincoln Center Middle School Jazz Academy. Kate has presented masterclasses at several high schools, both in the New York area and in Maryland. In the past, Kate has also taught for several years at various El Sistema inspired programs including the Harmony Program and Baltimore Symphony Orchestra’s Orchkids.
