Chris Ferrari was born in February, 2001 in Denver, Colorado, and has spent his life growing up just outside of Denver in Littleton. From a young age, Chris was constantly exposed to music and the arts through his parents, who introduced him to jazz. By age six, Chris was taking piano lessons in order to broaden his understanding of music. Along with being an aspiring musician, Chris was an active singer with the Colorado Children’s Chorale National Tour Choir, and regularly participated in theatre classes as a result of his love for the stage and performance. By 2010, the likes of John Coltrane, Dexter Gordon, and Sonny Rollins had inspired Chris to pick up the saxophone and pursue woodwinds. However, his teacher, Michael Weaver, urged him to begin his studies on the clarinet, which Chris still considers to be one of the most important and vital musical decisions of his life. His studies on the clarinet in both classical and jazz pushed him to also take up the saxophone in 2011, and the flute in 2016. At age 13, Chris began to study at the Denver School of the Arts, which has been an invaluable part of his development as a musician and student. Along with private lessons and education from school, Chris has studied with the Colorado Conservatory for the Jazz Arts since 2013, a program that has greatly contributed to his musical growth. Through dedication and hard work, Chris has now received state-wide and national musical acclaim – with All State Jazz Band, Essentially Ellington 2017, the 2017 Vail Jazz Workshop, and NYO Jazz 2018 being just a few of his accomplishments.
Chris has performed alongside and worked with countless notable musicians, including Sean Jones, Dianne Reeves, Terell Stafford, Wycliffe Gordon, Bill Cunliffe, Lewis Nash, Ken Peplowski, the Clayton Brothers, Dick Oatts, Greg Osby, Jovino Santos Neto, Veronica Swift, Walter Blanding, Greg Gisbert, Brad Goode, Josh Quinlan, Bob Montgomery, Convergence, Shane Endsley, David Berger, Melissa Aldana, Greg Abate, Ron Miles, Ken Schaphorst, Paul McKee, Steve Wiest, Dana Landry, Dave Liebman, and many others. Ferrari regularly performs throughout the Denver-Metro area with groups of his own and as a sideman. He has played at numerous venues and festivals throughout the Colorado area, including Dazzle Jazz, Nocturne, Baur’s Listening Lounge, the Mercury Cafe, Nissi’s, La Cour Art Bar, the Crossroads Theatre, Syntax Physic Opera, The Muse, Five Points Jazz Festival, Cherry Arts Festival, Vail Jazz Festival, Telluride Jazz Festival, and City Park Jazz. Additionally, Chris has also performed at various concert halls across the country and Europe, including Jordan Hall, Boettcher Concert Hall, Carnegie Hall, Het Concertgebouw, Usher Hall, Cadogan Hall, and the Konzerthaus Berlin. Chris plans to continue his music education by attending a music conservatory at the collegiate level after he graduates from Denver School of the Arts in 2019.
