Sam Jones

Praised by the New York Times for his “remarkable playing” and ability to create a “riveting dialogue” as a soloist, American trumpeter Sam Jones is recognized as one of the young leaders in his field. He has performed at the Lincoln Center Festival, the Helsinki Music Festival, Lucerne Festival, Darmstadt Courses for New Music, and the New York Philharmonic Biennial. Jones has performed with Ensemble musikFabrik, International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE), Talea Ensemble, Alarm Will Sound, The Knights, TILT Brass, Da Capo Chamber Players, Wet Ink Ensemble, League of Composers Orchestra, TAK Ensemble, Novus NY, Axiom, La Monte Young, and The Florida Orchestra. Sam appeared as a soloist at the opening of the 2015 Festival of New Trumpet Music (FONT). He is solo trumpeter in Charles Wuorinen’s New York-based chamber ensemble, with whom he has recorded It Happens Like This and given the New York premiere of Megalith at the Guggenheim Museum. He recently gave the world premiere of Wuorinen’s new work, Exsultet, for Choir (SSA), Trumpet, Trombone and Piano. Sam is also solo trumpet of Ensemble E´chappe´. Having performed and awarded a prize at the Karlheinz Stockhausen Courses in Ku¨rten, Germany, he is a specialist in Stockhausen’s music. Sam, along with Jay Campbell (cello) and Ryan Muncy (soprano saxophone) gave the U.S. Premiere of Stockhausen’s Erwachen (Awakening) in 2016. Originally from St. Petersburg, Florida, Sam Jones (b. 1993) began his studies at a young age with Carolyn Wahl and Rob Smith, both members of The Florida Orchestra. As his musical pursuits became more serious through high school, he won the National Trumpet Competition and later studied at the Center for Advanced Musical Studies at Chosen Vale. While an undergraduate student at Juilliard, his interest in live electronics and improvisation earned him a fellowship at the Future Music Lab, a collaboration with IRCAM. He is based New York City, with frequent performances throughout North America and Europe. Jones is a graduate of The Juilliard School. His major teachers include Håkan Hardenberger, Mark Gould, Rob Smith, and Carolyn Wahl.
